If there was a place us online marketers could vote and discuss stories, it was Sphinn. All us in the industry know and visit Sphinn. Most of us use it. I have to admit, before continuing to explaining this, I visit the website a few days a week but I am not active as I once was. I always appreciated the community and the site itself. As Danny Sullivan points out in his post explaining the end of voting on the site, he talks about how Sphinn was our Digg (for online marketers) because we were looked down upon in Digg for submitting ANY stories having to do with SEO, online marketing, etc.

So…What happened? Sphinn has decided its current process of a user submitting a story (in the online marketing space) and its community deciding what makes the front page will come to an end because of its decline in user activity when it comes to voting and how the site is currently being used.

Danny Sullivan explains, “…How will we find stories going forward? For one, our editors will continue to look for good stories to feature. In addition, we’ll still be accepting news ideas from others.

Our submission form will continue working. But those ideas will go in front of the editors to decide, not to a page where people will vote. If a submission is selected this way, the individual who submitted it will be credited.

Part of me is sad to see the voting system go. But the reality is that stories have been getting fewer and fewer votes, while the site’s traffic hasn’t changed much since our Sphinn 2.0 rollout. That tells us people are interested in a collection of good stories, not in actually voting for them.”

When any community is shaken by change, there will be revolt. This community of online marketers is no different. In the sphinn story, controversy is hot and people are mad.

I can see both sides of the argument but at the end of the day, as much as it is a community and we all really do have to respect that aspect of it, I’m 100% Danny does, you have to move forward with choices that may not be so easy. On the other hand, I’m not sure this may be the right decision moving forward as this is currently the ONLY website where online marketers can go and vote for stories and decide what makes a story ‘hot.’

Opinion?

The past 2/3 nights I have been flipping the channels and kept coming across these informercials about a make money online marketing system, and of course, that brought my attention. I actually started to watch it, I really wanted to know what this guy Anthony Morrison is selling.

The pitch is that you can make THOUSANDS of dollars from home with his system (that he made millions on) by buying his book but he has “vested interest in you”..in..”anyone that picks up the phone now and orders my book…”. The sales pitch is right there and plenty of people that are desperate looking to make a buck in this economy could easily fall for something like that. It seems that’s already the case as I guess I’ve never heard of this guy, but he’s been around as I came across a FORUM THREAD that has A LOT of people talking about this system being a scam.

It’s very long but from what I gathered from reading several other websites, this is what it is; Anthony Morrison system and the hidden millionaire introduces people to affiliate marketing using Google Adwords. He charges $4k and has you sign contracts (ouch.) There are horror stories.

My hope for this post is for people who are thinking about purchasing this system because they are struggling to make money and want to work at home is to know and understand what the system is and you don’t need it. Sure, to be fair, I believe learning Google Adwords and Affiliate Marketing does have value, let’s face it, A LOT of people make money that way. What gets me is to see people who are struggling being sold false information about the money that’s to be made and set real standards.

You can make a lot of money from Affiliate Marketing, just know and understand it takes time and a good amount of knowledge on what marketing tactics to use, what niches to enter due to pay-per-click prices in the search engines (Google Adwords for example) and other things.

If you spend a few hours online researching affiliate marketing and Google Adwords, you will get the gist of it and can learn it on your own. Anthonys Morrison system is something that people need to understand once you purchase it, you will spend hundreds if not thousands of dollars promoting these credit card offers and HE IS MAKING MONEY OF YOU. You can eliminate a middle man. It is so easy to sign up to an affiliate program.

Again, from what I have read and saw on the informercial, there is value in learning about affiliate marketing, Google Adwords, and getting a website as template because the reality is that someone who starts at first, without much knowledge, for the most part, fail. Again, that’s for the most part.

Anthony Morrisons the free milionaire offers a ‘free website’ that he provides to you and really sells you on the ‘no hosting fees.’ Well…what happens if Anthony Morrison goes out of business and shuts his servers down. You lose your website.

Again, beweary to purchasing this product and read forums from people whom have purchased this system.

This is a quote from DeskTopServer article on the system:

“Basically, all of the “success stories” are actually employees of the company, business associates with Anthony, or close friends and family members. Not a single one of them had to pay any monthly fees along the way or the $4k sign up fee, therefore none of them were technically “scammed” out of anything. In fact, the only way they get their paychecks is if Anthonys company is a success. (Think about that and it won’t be any surprise to you that they would write a “success story” for his website. Any good friend would, right?)”

If you hit the search engines about this you’ll get an earfull. Anthony Morrison and his employees are very proactive when it comes to responding to blog and message board posts. Also I suspect they’re posting all the glowing messages about making money with it. They’ve also registered a ton of domains and made blogs to try to dilute any negative posts and of course talk up their thing. Of course the people who invested the $4,000 and didn’t make money are pretty livid about it.

To sum it up, the problems I have with the Anthony Morrison Hidden Millionaire system is it doesn’t cost $4,000 to learn how to open a Google adwords account. It also doesn’t cost anything to join an affiliate network to promote credit card offers (they also charge a $30 a month fee which you shouldn’t be paying. The biggest problem people will run into is that the keywords for the business are expensive and with the conversion rate, most will be lucky to break even or not lose their shirt in the process.”

I really don’t doubt that statement, take a look at this blog: http://anthonymorrisonstudentsblog.com/, what do you think?

DISCLAIMER TO THIS POST: I see a lot of activity on this particular post and it was never my intention to just call someone out, especially of a system that I’ve never used myself. I saw this on TV a couple of times and being an online marketer and someone heavily involved in the industry, I decided to do some research and write a post. I urge you, besides reading this, to do your own research on this program. I just wrote based on the facts and info I’ve gathered. Again, I don’t know Anthony Morrison nor have I ever used the hidden millionaire program.

A) TRAFFIC: Twitter, obviously, has great traffic. As the fastest growing social network in the world, we can expect this traffic to increase through 2010 as Twitter can and may become a very useful and effective way of communicating online for the masses.

B) DEMOGRAPHIC: Twitters demographic has been a young demographic until mid-late 2009, when media began really using Twitter as a way of communication with the public, as well as many large web companies.

1- GENDER: The gender demographic, as you can see on the chart above is very even. Female lead with 53%, and Male 47%.

2- AGE GROUP: The bulk of the age group demographic ranges mostly from 18 years of age to 49 years of age. The highest demographic in age group is 18-34 years old being about 44% of users.

3- RACE: Caucasians lead the usage with 74% of the demographic on Twitter. African Americans have a 14% usage, then Hispanics with 8%.

C) TIME FREQUENCY: As you see on the chart, 72% of Twitter users are “passers-by” which means they have a short attention span to Twitter and are there because of a quick tweet, search something quick, etc. They account for 24% of Twitter traffic. 27% of Twitter users are regular users which I believe through 2010, that number will increase. They currently account for 41% of Twitter traffic. Only 1% of Twitter users are ADDICTS which account for 35% of Twitter users.

OTHER USEFUL DEMOGRAPHIC INFORMATION:

The audience that is on Twitter has a close affinity to the following:

Fashion/Cosmetics 4.7x
Communities/Teens 4.0x
Politics & Commentar 3.9x
I, probably like many of you love to follow those who have succeeded in great lengths. Anyway, to get back to Mr. Bill Gates, the one and only. Bill Gates is just one of those great minds that until very recently Google came along, you can say he built the largest company in America, Microsoft. {Google is now rivaling or grew larger}

TheGatesNotes.com is awesome. It is basically Bill Gates with a big notepad (web site) sharing his thoughts, ideas, pictures, and more. What struck me the most is the very cool and innovative design to this site which is really just a great blog. The sections it has are:

Visit the TheGatesNotes.com now, very cool read.

It seems President Barack Obama and Billionaire Bill Gates sending out their first tweet was kind of a big deal, wasn’t it? I actually expect that, given it is 2010. Everyone seems to be super surprised that two huge figures in our country did something online that is a common form of communication these days. Sure, Tweeting isn’t like emailing or calling someone on the phone, but it’s pretty damn popular. By 2010, didnt you think there would be flying cars? Come on…I know you did. So, why the hell is everyone so surprised? I find it funny, in a good way, not in a retard kind of way.

Source: ceospeaks.files.wordpress.com

Barack Obama sent out a tweet from the red cross headquaters and Bill Gates tweets, “‘Hello World.’ Hard at work on my foundation letter — publishing on 1/25.” His Twitter ID is @BillGates, in case you want to tweet the guy. Can you imagine tweeting with Bill Gates? That’d be pretty cool.

<font color="#4C787E">>>>>>Who do you think is the next big figure to Twitter that hasn’t yet??<<<<<< COMMENT BELOW.

So, as these two national figures use Twitter, a wave of popularity and a older demographic begins a widespread awareness of Twitter, there will be a big spike and change in the way we communicate online THROUGH Twitter. Since the very beginning of 2009, Twitter has been really increasing in popularity, but this week, Twitter just put itself on the map as one of the most important online properties in the world, by far.

If you aren’t on Twitter, what are you waiting for? If you’re an online marketer, Twitter has been such a great source for traffic and link building through that traffic and exposure of content that is available by retweets, etc.

Want to start Tweeting with Bill Gates and Barack Obama? Follow them:

Usually, most things I come up on is tips on what to do when planning on purchasing a website, what are the values, etc. I guess if you know what you’re looking in the purchase of a website, you’ll know what other people are looking for so you know to provide that information.

I stumbled upon a great thread on Digital Point on tips of selling and buying a website. Here are the tips of selling which I thought would be helpful to anyone who is looking to sell their website:

Do: Do give a URL to the website that you are selling. If you’re afraid of a person stealing your content or whatever. That’s going to happen anyways, and the person is buying your website because they themselves don’t want to do it. Not giving a URL makes you look seedy.

Do: Give point form summarizations of what your website does. No need for a 1000 word essay. People don’t read.

Do: Give an auction end date, or a BIN. If you don’t, it’s just obvious you want the most money possible. Which isn’t wrong, but doesn’t come across well.

Do: Give statistics about the income. Take a screen shot (Blurring out things that are against TOS of course) and of course provide long term income. At least 4 months, if your website is newer than that, give as much information as you can (i.e. the day that you added monetization)

Do: Give statistics about the traffic. Provide a link to your stats generation page. Or a screen shot. Again, as much information as possible

Don’t: Get angry with people if they start questioning things such as, where your content is from, is it copyrighted? Do you have full copyrights? If you can’t answer these questions, just hope that your buyer is really stupid.

Don’t: Spam the forums to get the required number of posts. People do check your history before purchasing.

If you’ve been in this game for a while, you probably have a few properties lying around that you may not use but did work hard at one point. Maybe its time to bring that site out of the closet and put it in the market.

If you havent messed with it in a while, try to tune it up for about 1-3 months with some SEO and design which will give it value and there is ONE key value a buyer will look for more than the monetization of the site at THIS particular point, and that is traffic. BUILD TRAFFIC. BUILD TRAFFIC. BUILD TRAFFIC.

Maybe you’ve heard of it, maybe you have not. I came across iOffer.com which seems to have some weight in Google as I’ve seen some listings from this site in the organic rankings. Besides that, it has some cool tools like exporting all your items from eBay and its just a cool concept overall.

Some of the websites feature as a seller includes NO LISTING FEES. We all know how the rising fee’s on eBay is affecting profit margins on eBay and Amazon selling fees are also through the roof.

iOffer.com is no means a replacement for selling on Amazon or eBay but its a good supplement and again, it doesnt cost anything. That we hope for as online marketers is that it grows but then we hope it stays loyal to its current non-fee structure.

Some of the features as it mentions on the website are:

-Mr. Grabber:
Mr. Grabber is a powerful tool that allows you to bring over your feedback rating from eBay™, Overstock™ and Sell.com™.

-Snag-a-Sale:
Sometimes a buyer and a seller may not agree on a price. Snag-a-Sale lets you grab that buyer. If you have a better price or item, why not Snag-a-Sale!

iOffer.com vs. eBay Comparison

Human edited search engine launches its Answer property, Mahalo Answers, which by far, is one of Yahoos most successful property. For us online marketers and link finders, this is yet another great place to get us links to our websites and/or generate some traffic.

So, how did Jason Calacanis, founder of Mahalo.com, think this will have a standing chance to compete versus Yahoo Answers and wikiAnswers?

As virtual goods are becoming more and more popular, Calacanis, see’s the potential to put that to work in the “social” space to motivate users to respond to questions by earning virtual dollars that can and will become real currency.

How do I earn money?

-If your answer to a question offering a tip is selected as the best answer, we will deposit the tip into your Mahalo account. All tips are in Mahalo Dollars. Each Mahalo Dollar is currently worth $0.75 when paid out via PayPal. If you answer a direct question offering a tip and the asker doesn’t request a refund, we will deposit the tip into your Mahalo account.

-How will I get paid?

Once you earn more than 40 Mahalo Dollars, you can request to be paid via PayPal on your tips settings page. Each Mahalo Dollar is currently worth $0.75 when paid out via PayPal. When you submit your request, we’ll transfer the full balance, or the portion of the balance you choose, to your PayPal account on the 15th of the following month.

As the search engine wars continue between the big three, Google, Yahoo and MSN, there are still little guys trying to make their way into the search market. [let's not forget Ask] The latest search engine to have some buzz was Cuil which got some press but really, are you searching on Cuil?

A new search engine called SearchMe, is on the rise and I think it is the most innovative search engine to come out since…well the traditional search engines. It’s not new and I may be a little late blogging about it but it hasn’t gotten the popularity that you would think as something as innovative as this to search.

How will SearchMe.com monetize its search engine? How about paid ads that show you where you’re clicking as the natural search results? How cool would that be?

SearchMe’s home page features the latest or most popular searches which is usually right on the money. It also has search capabilities for video and images. The images and video search are very cool as you can just as you would be searching for a website.

As SearchMe evovles, I think it is heading in the right direction where everyone who I’ve showed it to so far has shown great interest in searching that way and gave very positive feedback. We’ll see where it goes from here.

So, after ALL the buzz and actually, this is a site where the buzz about it keeps increasing, I decided to join Twitter. Many online marketers are on Twitter, well, I think now people actually like it but many have joined it to see how they could “game it” and see how it could work towards our benefit or the benefit of clients.

I see why it could work towards generating traffic and buzz now. People can know what you’re doing and can actually see your interactions with others. It seems like a great tool for big companies to keep close interaction with their followers, or even better yet, seems like a VERY powerful tool for bloggers.

Barak Obama has a Twitter account, what a smart move.

Hit me up on Twitter HERE or leave me a comment with your twitter address. If I can figure something cool on it (game it =) somehow) I’ll let you know.

Friday morning, I posted a podcast titled, “Video Opportunity for Publishers & Advertisers.” Soon after, I was browsing the web just checking out some stuff and stumbled upon Swicki. Video is in and if you can monetize it, you should! In the podcast I talked about Adsense video units, which is basically an embedded YouTube video in your site or blog with an ad on top and at the bottom which I think can give you good CTRs.

So, Swicki is pretty cool. You can check it out on my blog at the left (it usually shows mini video clips but now it is showing a tag cloud.) Here is why I think this could work to monetize your visitors from video. It’s something new so users will be curious to click through. It’s a video widget which you set-up keyword tags and will show related videos (pretty cool videos you may even find interesting.) It scours Google video for related videos and takes the visitor to a site with all the videos in one place.

So how do you monetize this? While setting up your Swicki page, you can customize the ads section choosing what platform of ads to show (adsense, etc) and allows you to enter your code.

As a search marketer, I never knew the important of the whole back end set up of things. That is until the first time I had a story make the front page on DIGG and BAM…server went down, it was truly a mess. This isn’t a technical post but more so a warning and a good deal I found.

If you’re like me and just worried about the marketing side of things, start thinking about back end issues, especially if you’re running affiliate marketing campaigns and they start piling up. I had everything hosted with GoDaddy on a server with MANY domain names…it may be cheap, but you get what you pay for, but pretty good to start to be honest.

A few months back I remember listening to Shoemoney’s radio show and he had someone from Lunarpages on. I came across the Lunarpages Coupons blog and for any webmaster or someone running a good amount of campaigns, it really has great offers (not only cause this is a review.)

Lunarpages is very reputable and that’s something you must really look for in whoever is hosting your sites. The most important factors to me as of now for a web hosting company is recovery time (if you loose files), price, and credibility.

Some of the coupons currently up are:

Lunarpages coupon for web hosting – Save $28 and 2 Free Months:
“28offplus2″ – $28 Off Plus 2 Free Months – Use Coupon Here

Lunarpages coupon for VPS Hosting – Save $35:
“Save35″ – $35 Off – Use Coupon Here

Lunarpages coupon for Dedicated Servers – Save $50:
“Save50OnDed″ – $50 Off – Use Coupon Here

(Note: I only do paid reviews when I really think it will help readers)

Want the real facts on Facebook apps and advertising? What are some of the major App players doing? Check out ADONOMICS.

If you’re a software developer up-to-date on online trends and so fourth, then you’ve thought about developing a Facebook application. If you’re an online marketer, you know the power of Facebook and what the applications mean in terms of opportunity to capitalize on one of the fastest growing website in the world right now.

The New York Times reports all about the craze with Facebook and what some of the big players in the Application field in the market have done to hit it big with Facebook users.

Here are what I think are the most important quotes:

“Some developers report earning tens of thousands of dollars in advertising with the applications they have created”

“Nevertheless, Silicon Valley venture capitalists are creating funds devoted entirely to investing in Facebook tools. Internet entrepreneurs are shifting their businesses to focus on the social networking site. Some of the most popular applications are being sold, sometimes for hundreds of thousands of dollars — but only when buyers’ and sellers’ ideas about the potential of Facebook are similar.”

“chief executive of RockYou, based in San Mateo, Calif., said the price would be high for anyone who wanted to buy his 20-person company’s most popular Facebook widget, Super Wall. “If you told me you were going to write me a check for $10 million, I’d say, ‘Forget it,’” said Mr. Tokuda, 41.”

“Mark E. Zuckerberg, announced a new investment fund, the FB Fund, to give grants of up to $250,000 to developers creating new tools for the site.”

“The iLike tool, which lets users post clips of their favorite songs, has since been added to the pages of 8.6 million of the service’s 43 million users, and it gets twice as much traffic as iLike’s year-old Web site.”

If you’re a Facebook Apps developer…Contact me…I have a million dollar Idea!!! Would love to speak with you.
