About 2 weeks ago, my fathers AOL account was ‘hacked.’ It’s one of those things where someone tells you they got an email from you with a link or just a blank message and you’re like, ‘huh?’

So, I personally called AOL to get this issue resolved and get the account restored because he lost capabilities to log in to his email. I called a customer service number I found online and sure enough I got through to someone (It was nearly impossible back in the day.)

I explained to the customer service rep the problem and for the next 20 minutes, the conversation about them (AOL) insisting we purchase a security plan for the email that would protect the account with added security settings. At this point…I’m starting to think AOL hacked the account themselves to try and capitalize on this up-sell that would mean turning free email subscribers and monetizing them since AOL was all about a subscription model since its first days and then of course that went real sour and is now pretty much a content company.

The AOL customer service rep on the phone began taking some steps back when I started to explain that if I could not restore the account without purchasing this ‘plan’ that meant AOL can hack everyones free email account that’s had their account for many years and charge them to basically get access back to it. The customer service rep then started taking some steps back and saying it was necessary at this point but believe you me, it was a big selling point and left me curious at the end.

Nevertheless, we did restore the email account free of charge but you never know what a company is willing to do to raise capital or gain subscriptions.

So going to college is not as the ideal thing to do as it once was. Don’t get me wrong…going to school is great and if you can afford it, even have to take out loans for it, a college education is very important. I’ve been talking to more and more people, even watching the news, young graduates are having a very hard time finding jobs right out of school…and even worse…are stuck with a very big loan to pay for it.

There are many bright people out there and while school is very important, there is nothing like good hands on experience. One of PayPals co-founder is now paying young people to pursue their programming career which is in full demand in this digital revolution.

TalkingPointsMemo.com had a good graph which looks to come from the office of House Speak Pelosi comparing jobs in the U.S. both under President George Bush and President Barak Obama. Jobs right now IS the topic of the moment, besides healthcare and I believe, and probably you as well that both these factors, if confronted aggressively, can bring this country back out of the recession and hopefully some stability.

While almost all people to the right (republicans) have constantly criticized President Obama, he did take office on the brink of a financial collapse to the U.S., what’s not to understand? While a bailout may not have been a favorable plan of action for most (including the president on the bank bailout,) according to many economist, it did save our country and hopefully putting us on the right track.

This post isn’t about politics but about a positive story from all the negative we hear day-in and day-out in the media with the state of our economy. Hopefully, 2010 can be a year of recovery and put more Americans to work. The internet (mostly what I blog about) can be a huge playing factor in the economy. Though I may not agree with taxes regarding online purchases, it can raise lots of capital for the government.

Anyhow, here are some of the new features that the post reports on:

-There will be multi-touch gestures OS-wide. (Would make sense for that as the rumored OS for the iTablet is close if not the same as the iPhone)

-“A few new ways” to run applications in the background — multitasking.

-Many graphical and UI changes to make navigating through the OS easier and more efficient. We haven’t had this broken down, but we can only hope for improved notifications, a refreshed homescreen, etc.

-The update will supposedly be available for only the iPhone 3G and 3GS, but will “put them ahead in the smartphone market because it will make them more like full-fledged computers” more than any other phone to date. Everyone is “really excited.”

-The last piece of information is the most vague, but apparently there will be some brand new syncing ability for the contacts and calendar applications.

For those advertisers that have been running Adwords for quite sometime, Quality Score is something we have come to get very familiar with over the past 2-3 years. It determines a few things in our campaign. In the Google Adwords blog, there is a guide to Quality Score that explains a few things. For those who are just starting out in the PPC game with Adwords, Quality Score is always a question mark.

Even for some veterans, Google always tells us something new. Something we heard somewhere now is not true.

Let’s go down the list:

* There might not be ads on all search results, even for queries that advertisers are bidding on.

This usually happens with very broad keywords or trademarked terms.

* Just because there is low competition for a keyword doesn’t mean that it will be inexpensive.

This is the big question for most new advertisers. Google knows what each keyword is really worth to an advertiser based on the data of searches for that keyword. So, just because no one is bidding on that term, doesnt mean your bid will be .5 cents.

As they explain it:

“Remember that competition is only one of the variables that determines your actual CPC. The price you pay for a click is also determined by your relative keyword Quality Score for that query. If your keyword has a low Quality Score relative to the other ads on that page, you may find that your actual CPC is close to your maximum CPC, even though there is low competition for that keyword. Keep in mind, though, that you’ll never be charged more than your maximum CPC for a click, no matter how low your Quality Score.”

* Your ad position is not a factor in your Quality Score.

This has also been a mis-conception as those who argued that bidding higher will get you a better CTR, hence better QS. Truth is, Google is smart enough to understand if you are in the 7th position, there is an expected CTR for that ad.

* Your bid primarily impacts your rank, not your Quality Score.

If you outbid your competitors, doesnt mean you have a higher quality score and won’t get you one. Although it may get you a higher ranking. Read point above.

* Quality is given extra consideration when determining which ads appear in the top slots.

Basically, they are saying, look, if you are bidding the same as an advertiser, what will push you over the ranking spot is your quality score.

* Your ad conversion rate does not affect your Quality Score.

* A few bad days of performance will not ruin your Quality Scores.

* Quality Score doesn’t suffer when your ads are showing infrequently or not showing due to pausing or budgeting.

* Restructuring your account doesn’t cause you to lose your historical Quality Score information.

* Google does not keep track of your landing page quality history.

Besides having the right structure to your paid search campaign to run a successful one, the landing page is what will turn a visitor into a customer. Without a good landing page, you might as well shut your campaign down. How many times have I heard, “Im running Adwords but not really converting.” Here is the thing. If you are getting a good amount of clicks for the right keyword and you’re not converting, its most likely a landing page issue unless your ad copy is just crap.

Brian Carter had an interesting post in Search Engine Journal titled, “Quality Score Surprise! #1 Ad Position Doesn’t Improve QS.”

So, if you don’t know or havent been around the PPC game too long, how Google works is the higher your CTR, the lower your click will be and higher position your ad will get, here is an image from the SEJ article:

Here is a quote from what the Adwords Rep told him, “CTR is normalized in regard to quality score so ads in top positions which usually have a high CTR don’t have an unfair advantage. While higher positions tend to have a higher CTR, we expect higher positions to have a higher CTR.

For example, we know that when an ad appears in position 4 it has an x% CTR. When that same ad moves up to position 1, with no other change, that same ad has a CTR of x+y% CTR. When we calculate quality score, we remove the impact of the y variable so that we just have the intrinsic CTR of the ad, independent of position. Therefore, while increasing bid may increase CTR, that increase alone should not improve the advertiser’s quality score”

Nevertheless, many people have told me that yes, a good CTR has decreased bids but personally, I don’t see that. I believe Google HAS TO BE smart enough (the algo and programmers) to understand the ad position and what a good CTR has to be for that good CTR. Let’s face it, the crappiest ad will get clicks if its at the top of the search results, thats just how it works, BUT, I have seen better CTRs in other positions than #1 therefore getting an increase in ad position.

I haven’t confirmed that for sure because we dont know what other advertisers are bidding. If they are bidding more than I am and I am higher, then it holds true. We’ve yet to really confirm this algo.

If you dont want to deal with the tidious task of building the same campaign over and over in the different engines, now you can easily import your Google Adwords campaign or Yahoo Search Marketing campaign to the MSN Adcenter platform in the click of a button.

Theres a post in the AdCenter community blog that shows you step by step how to go about doing this:

Step 1 – Choose Your Account and Import the Sheet

In adCenter click on the campaigns tab and choose the account you wish to import your sheet to.

Then click import campaigns. This will bring up an extended options list.

Now select your language and market and secondly select the appropriate time zone.

Then click on “Import file” and locate and open your sheet. (Remember that in order to locate the import sheet it must be saved in csv format.)

A prompt will be given to notify the success of the import.

Your campaigns will not go live immediately. All ad groups are set to draft. They won’t be active until they are manually submitted. This is to allow time for the remaining variables to be populated, i.e. negative keywords, bids, URLs and targeting.

Step 2 – Make Amendments

adCenter will default the campaign budget type to divide across the month. Ad Group start dates will default to the day of the import and no end date will be set.

As mentioned above, no destination URLs, bids, negatives keywords and targeting would have been imported. These values can now be populated.

Step 3 – Submit Ad Groups

After all modifications have been made, your campaign or campaigns are now ready to go live.

The final step involves submitting all the ad groups.

This can be achieved by clicking into your campaign, then clicking on the box next to each ad group and clicking submit.

TIP: All the ad groups in a campaign can be selected by clicking the box underneath “Pause”

Now the import process is complete and your ads will go live soon!

I dont know why I chose the title, I just did. This morning I woke up and I thought to myself, I love what I do, thank the lord! This is more of a personal blog post than anything else. It seems too long ago I wrote a post and I wish I had more time to dedicate to my blog and thats one of my resolutions for 2009.

I just got back from a vacation to Buenos Aires I took after a year of hard work. I have to say 2008 was a very good year for me and I think for the industry as well even though we are facing probably the worse economic times any of us has ever witnessed.

There are a few things I will try to accomplish this year and that will start by trying to prioritize and organizing my time better. There are so many things I’d like to do and so little time managing what I have going already. I know I won’t steer away from anything online because thats what I know best and have learned a great deal this past year and very excited for what 2009 has to bring.

In the middle of 2008 I made a transition from lead generation to e-commerce and that has been very successful for me. I always loved to sell things online. My love for that actually started YEARS ago when I was a kid and I would put anything on eBay because when that items 0 in red turned to bids to green, it was MY adrenaline rush, thats when I knew I had found what I wanted to do, and years later, here I am making a good living doing what I still love to do in different ways as well.

As the economy still faces hardships, Ive been a bit tuned out of the news and have just been focused on the task and business at hand and pushing forward no matter what, I hope you do the same. Stay positive and hopefully 2009 will be an even better year.

Mark Cuban, mostly known for being the outspoken owner of the Dallas Mavericks and maybe an internet guru from his billion dollar sale of his company to Yahoo, has been charged with Insider Trading by the SEC for “acting on nonpublic information and selling shares of Mamma.com to avoid more than $750,000 in losses, the SEC alleged,” reports Reuters.

“According to the SEC, Mamma.com invited Cuban to participate in a stock offering that would be conducted at a discount to the market price after he agreed to keep the information confidential.

However, within hours of receiving information, Cuban called his broker and told him to sell his entire position in the company, the SEC alleged.

When the offering was publicly announced, Mamma.com’s stock price dropped 9.3 percent from the prior day’s closing price.”

This news may actually bring some light to Momma.com which…who knows about? This search engine looks like its doomed to fail and Im sure Mark Cuban saw that right away.
