Just came across a great post by John Mueller which talks about getting your pagerank jacked from you! The post is titled, “Hackers stealing your PageRank,” and its something we should be concerned with and at least check…NOW!

I never gave this much thought myself. I guess I should have considering everything else online is pretty much being hacked by these technical douchebags that do anything from spam emails to stealing other peoples identity online…so…there are those that engage in these type of practices for seo reasons.

“A different angle of attack is to redirect only search engine crawlers to a different site. By doing this, they can make it look like the pages of a website moved to a new domain name. In general, when search engines find redirects like that, they will more or less pass the “value” that a page had on to the new URL — that generally also applies to PageRank. So in a sense, they are trying to steal the value that a webmaster has built up over time.”

The quick and easiest way to figure out if something is up with your website is checking out this website: http://web-sniffer.net/

Make sure that everything checks out fine in terms of any sort of re-direction on your root domain, etc.

Here is an example he used to show a hi-jack:

Learn some of the codes if you have no idea what any of this means:

- 301 Re-direct
- HTTP 302

Let’s face it, the odds that President Barack Obama were very low, why? Well…he was going against Hillary Clinton (just the name had way more leverage than anything Obama had) and he was going to be the first black president which the question was always asked, “is this country read for a black president?”

The strategy behind President Obamas is always talked about it and it really did come down to grassroots movement, and it was mainly online. The most powerful marketing tool is…..guess…..? It isn’t being ranked #1 in Google for a certain keyword (although that will help bigtime, right?) it is your most valuable asset your business has…your customers.

The landscape of the oldest form of marketing in the world (word of mouth) has changed in the past few years with the internet building social channels that have changed communication as we know it. Let’s take a look channels like Facebook or Twitter for example. Almost everyone I know in the age range of 14-40 has a Facebook or Twitter account. Each of those channels have MILLIONS of users and has become a main form of communication for many. Aside from email, those two channels have to be the next largest communication hubs of the internet.

YOUR CUSTOMERS are on these channels and you can use the power of ‘word of mouth’ marketing from them by simple asking them for their support or give some sort of incentive in order for them to talk about your brand. Sure, it may not be the ideal way but it’s a way. President Obama was just a regular senator at the beginning of the election but grew larger than life by selling to the people what he believed which is what they wanted to hear, ‘change.’ Obviously, our businesses won’t touch people in that way but if your product or service is that good, THEY WILL TALK ABOUT YOU.

Use your newsletters or individually personalize emails to your customers thanking them for their business and how they can help the company by a simple tweet or facebook status.

**This post is for more established online based businesses with customers to engage in these strategies.

How great would it be to have Facebook Fan pages data come through Google Analytics. As I spoke about the importance of Facebook fan pages, this can be a crutial piece of the puzzle to have data on the performance of your Facebook fan page.

“We launched our Facebook fan page earlier this month and as with all Facebook pages only Facebook Insights program is available to page administrators. Facebook Insights shows demographic details and interactions on your pages BUT limited to show information of fans only. It is far less sophisticated and comprehensive when compared to the free Google Analytics. One of the limitations of Facebook Fan pages is that you can only run limited Javascript on it and Google Analytics needs Javascript code included to correctly track visitors. We have successfully managed to get ALL functions of Google Analytics working on our Facebook fan page (including visitor statistics, traffic sources, visitor country, keyword searches with all other powerful reporting & maps overlays etc).”

Markus Frind is the man behind PlentyofFish.com and if he has any advice or tips regarding how you can make it, it’s worth a listen. In an Inc.com article, he list four rules and tips to becoming successful in your niche.

Markus Frind of PlentyofFish.com - Source: Inc.com

#1 Pick a market where the competition charges money, and do it for free.

#2 Keep your costs low. Really low.

#3 Use Web 2.0

#4 Relax.

I love all these rules, of course. But #4 is probably the one rule that entrepreneurs mostly ignore because we think once you relax, it’s over. While others are asleep, you want to get ahead of the curve and KEEP WORKING. As it states in the article, “That’s serious business advice. Frind thinks that entrepreneurs spend too much time and money doing work for work’s sake. If you do very little, you’re less likely to screw up what you’ve already got. Frind has kept his staff small by design–he has only three employees, who handle customer service–and he personally works only about an hour a day.”

So, after reading this post, shut your monitor off, go have a drink, and RELAX. Let tomorrow come and hope for another good day! Even more so if you have a bad day, tomorrow should be better.

The lattest one that you may want to know about and protect yourself from is how the search engines such as Google index your profiles information such as pictures, etc. How do you protect yourself from the search engines and keep privacy from them indexing stuff from your profile?

I hear all the time, and read on forums, people who start blogs and go for about 6 months to a year, after that time, some bloggers (or websites for that matter) get stagnant on traffic. Although new content is being created, traffic from older post just fall off.

Here are some ways to increase traffic to your blog:

1- Sign up to forums in your niche. Link out to your post if the thread is relevant and engage users. YOUR READERS are the people in the forums looking for information you may have already written about that they can use.

2- You can use Pay-Per-Click as a channel to drive more traffic. Choose the most affordable keywords and create large ad groups bidding very low for relevant keywords. This will surely increase your traffic. You may pay at first but long-term results can be well worth it.

3- Offer something for FREE. Offering something such as a free EBOOK can increase traffic because either readers will share it with others or other bloggers will link to the page driving traffic. Make sure to include your blogs URL anywhere you offer something free.

4- Write guest post in blogs similar to your niche. THIS DOES WORK. Reach out to the bigger blogs in your niche and ask to write a guest post. They will be happy to add more good relevant content so why not? Also a good network resource.

5- You can always find something worth while about your blog everyone should know. There are plenty of free PRESS RELEASE websites out there that allow you to place a link to your blog.

6- Article marketing is still a good way to drive traffic. It may not be the best SEO resource, but if you write quality content and place a link back to your blog, it will surely make a difference. Submit your articles to websites such as eZine.

7- Twitter has been a great channel as a traffic driver. Place a link to good post from your blogs and try to get as many followers as possible. Remember to add twitter buttons to ALL your post.

8- Social bookmarking websites is still a MAJOR source of traffic and can not only help you with link building but driving traffic. Submit your post to pages such as DIGG.com, PROPELLER.com, and others. You can find good list online for these.

9- Create and Submit RSS Feeds. Feeds can always be a good source of traffic. Submit your blogs RSS feeds to all the blog rss feed directories you can. If you find some with good PR, even better.

10- Comment on other related blog post and IF POSSIBLE AND REALTED, place a link to a related story you wrote.

One great thing about Microsofts pay-per-click platform, Microsoft Adcenter, which serves up ads on Microsofts engines BING, LIVE.com (now re-directed to Bing), MSN.com, and soon to be syndicated to Yahoo, is the demographic abilities to target your audience.

On the Adcenter Community blog, there is a great post about easy steps to targeting your demographic when creating a pay-per-click campaign. So, how can you determine the target demographic for your keywords? One tool that many people don’t know exist and can be very useful to build your campaign is the Microsoft Forecast Tool which gives you demographic data based on your keyword.

Now, for setting this criteria in the search engine while building your campaign (steps and instructions taken from blog post)

Applying demographic targeting is a simple process that can be done right in Microsoft adCenter. Demographic targets can be set at the Campaign or the Ad Group level.

1) Select the Campaigns tab

2) If you would like to set demographic targets to the Campaign level, select Edit

3) If you would like to set demographic targets to the Ad Group level, select the Ad group on which you would like to implement this functionality

4) To the right of the Campaign or Ad Group name, select Change settings

5) Under Campaign targeting and to the right of Target your customers by location, select Edit

6) Under Targeting setting, select Demographic on the left

7) Ensure the Apply campaign settings check box is unchecked if applying age or gender to specific ad groups

    – If this box is cleared, no campaign-level age or gender targeting will be applied

    – If this box is missing, there is no campaign-level age or gender targeting

To specify an incremental by for an age or gender group, select a value in the corresponding base bid + drop-down lists

9) Select Apply and then Save

If you are in the business of online retail and ship to other countries than the United States, you know the variables that go into customers abroad. Shipping methods, etc, one big key element of that difference between a domestic and international customer is language.

Sure, if you have a website right now with customers from all over the world, you are selling to these customers such as in the United Kingdom, Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Brazil, etc. The question if you should be asking yourself is if they understand the website better, meaning if it was in their native language, would I have better conversions? Would this customer that speaks much better, let’s say Portuguese, feel more comfortable if my site was in their language?

Many companies do seek a translation company to translate their website and build a whole new page with their page in secondary languages. Google has just released a widget that can make this way easier to the customer. In the click of a buttom, this widget will turn the website to the language of your choice.

Google tells all about this widget in their new blog post, as they state, “Today, we’re happy to announce a new website translator gadget powered by Google Translate that enables you to make your site’s content available in 51 languages. Now, when people visit your page, if their language (as determined by their browser settings) is different than the language of your page, they’ll be prompted to automatically translate the page into their own language. If the visitor’s language is the same as the language of your page, no translation banner will appear.”

All this takes a simple piece of code to put into your website. You can find it now in the Google Website Translator.

As a tip for those of you who deal with international customers and have experienced issues in your customer service department with customers (potential and current) sending emails in other languages other than English and your customer service reps dont speak that language, try to Google Translate tool.

I thought I’d put this up since I had a problem figuring this out (IM NOT VERY TECHNICAL) then maybe it’ll be useful to some of you. Most themes you download and then upload to your server, are not writeable so you can make changes to the themes, etc. I was trying to figure this out for a while since I made quite a few changes to the style sheet of this particular theme. SO, here it is:

In the screenshot below, look at the last column – that shows the permissions. It looks a bit confusing, but for now just note the sequence of letters.

Initial permissions

Right-click ‘index.php’ and select ‘File Permissions’
A popup screen will appear.

Look at the number 666. When you follow these steps, for the most part, you will see 644. Just go ahead and make a quick change to 666 and click apply and then should do it.

So, you think your website has been penalized by Google since you’re not showing in the SERPs anymore? That may be true, it may not be. First of all, let’s start by saying if you dont see your site in the SERPs for a day or two, don’t go sending a reconsideration request to Google, wait a little longer.

Google has some basic clear guidelines on how your website should be structured but they point out the specific guidelines which are the ones that are really going to hurt you:

-Avoid hidden text or hidden links.

-Don’t use cloaking or sneaky redirects.

-Don’t send automated queries to Google.

-Don’t load pages with irrelevant keywords.

-Don’t create multiple pages, subdomains, or domains with substantially duplicate content.

-Don’t create pages with malicious behavior, such as phishing or installing viruses, trojans, or other badware.

-Avoid “doorway” pages created just for search engines, or other “cookie cutter” approaches such as affiliate programs with little or no original content.

-If your site participates in an affiliate program, make sure that your site adds value. Provide unique and relevant content that gives users a reason to visit your site first.

So, before you file for a reconsideration request, make sure your website is Google “compliant”. Many that have filed for a reconsideration request will tell you that you will NOT get an answer from Google but rather will see your site showing in the SERPs again. They can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks to get to your request.

To request reconsideration of your site:

First, make sure you’ve added your site to your Webmaster Tools account, and verified site ownership.
Sign in to Google Webmaster Tools.

On the Dashboard, under Tools in the list on the right, click Request reconsideration and follow the steps.

<!--
google_ad_client = "pub-0024390435623036";
/* 300x250, created 10/3/08 */

When building a website in dreamweaver, one of the most important components of building a website, or tool I should say, is using what is called a “library item” which is a file that allows you to create a file which can be changed sitewide when you need to make a change to a certain part of your website. Components such as a logo, footer, etc are things that are changed moreless often on a website.

These library items are in the assets part of dreamweaver where you will create the file. How to create a library item:

-Open the library panel by clicking Window > Assets, and then choosing the Library button

-Select the portion of HTML that you want to convert into a library element. This can be a block of HTML or a section of the page in design view.

-Drag that selection to the library pane and drop it there.

-Give your library item a name that will help you remember what it is.

Now, when you need to change the library item, go to the assets, click on the library item you created, make the changes and hit save. Now, the library item (which again, could be a logo, etc) will change sitewide.
