These advertisements are administered by Google and generate revenue on either a per-click or per-impression basis.”

1) SenseApp for iPhone

If you have the iPhone, this is a great on-the-go app to check your Adsense earnings.

2) Google Adsense Calculator

I’m not sure how accurate this tool is but it can definitely give you an idea as to what you can expect given your current stats. Login in to your Adsense account and get some stats to plugin in to this calculator. The tool can be found here.

The Google Adsense notifier is an extension for FireFox. It displays Adsense earnings on the Toolbar. You can download the Google Adsense Notifier here.

4) Google AdSense Preview Tool

The Google Adsense preview tool is always an extension to be used with FireFox. It allows you to see how an ad would be displayed on any given page which can give you a good feel and ideas for how you can place ads. You can download the extension here.

5) GraphSense for Adsense

With GraphSense you no longer need to download the CSV-file to Excel to create graphs. Instead you get free pie-charts, line-graphs and bar-graphs at your fingertips straight in the Adsense administration interface. GraphSense supports channels, different currencies and languages, the different administrative models google has for content ads, search ads and referals. You can download Graphsense here.

In August 2008, I wrote a post titled, “Best Performing Adsense Ads Explained,” which talked about, well, the best performing Adsense ads and which convert best. At that time, I had a blog project going and testing and I blogged about the best converting ads that worked. From that post, I explained, “This {image} is the 300×250 ad that is said to convert best. I have started to implement this and it does convert. The links (as suggested) should be blue with black text and black URL display. Also, NO BORDERS.”

I have since then, kept my inline Adsense Text advertising and I’m seeing some results in Adsense as of late (very little as the online marketing niche doesnt click on much Adsense ads.) I wan’t to test different Ads and see what is converting best, but it also has to look good. So, how can I see what type of ads and how they are displayed can convert best. Easy, let me see Googles case studies. If they do a case study about a certain site, it means that account holder/website owner probably has a good account with Google and so they are chosen for this. You can see this by going to the Adsense blog.

Look at AskDavidTaylor.com for example.

I really like how he displays the AD wrapped around the text which doesnt seem to have a border around the block, if it does, than it is a light grey border. These are his tips:
-Focus on generating really good content that meets real user needs.
-Design your blog so that there are minimal distractions for the user.
-Wrap your blog entry around the Google ad unit and put the ads where users will see them, though make sure you have them visually distinct from your content: trying to trick readers into clicking on ads is a definite no-no and anti-reader too.

It seems techniques and strategy for Adsense have been remaining steady for the past 1-2 years. Text Ads are what work best, in my opinion, and through integrating ads with content.

Inside Adsense, Googles blog all about Google Adsense has put out a 3 part series on their blog called Optimisation Essential. It is a fairly decent series for beginners to get the basics and knowledge all about Google Adsense and how it can best work for them.

This series goes hand in hand with a post I wrote last month, “Best Performing Adsense Ads Explained,” which Google also put out their own version in this series in the post “best-performing ad unit sizes.”

Google put out a heat map as you see above that describes (as an example from test or experience I believe) the best sports to place your Adsense blocks. As they explain, “The colors fade from dark orange (strongest performance) to light yellow (weakest performance). All other things being equal, ads located above the fold tend to perform better than those below the fold. Ads placed near rich content and navigational aids usually do well because users are focused on those areas of a page.”

Tips from Google for Adsense:

*Above the fold of a page (the section of the page a user can see without scrolling)

*At the end of an article

*Aligned with content

I think you’ll see the best CTRs with those ads that are IN the content. Many thought ad networks like Kontera would have the highest CTR because it is actually ad link IN the actual content, but as you may see from my mini-series, “Project Monetizing Site with Google Adsense & Kontera” which is followed by “Project Monetizing Site with Google Adsense & Kontera: Update Part I,” Adsense is a better converter of clicks.

On August 25, 2008, I wrote a blog post titled, “Project Monetizing Site with Google Adsense & Kontera,” which was done for the purpose of experimenting with creating a website without A SINGLE strategy or tactic implied for the search engines or anyone to find it (link building, etc.)

Since then, I’ve probably added about 4-8 URLs to the website because the goal of this for me (with the LITTLE time I put into it, less than an hour a month) is to create thousands of pages of content to continually make it rank in the search engines for the long-tail keywords and monetize it. I’ve only used Google Adsense and Konetra to monetize it.

I’ve used two different blocks of adsense. The 250×250 block of ads (using blue color links) and also the horizontal half banner using black links (may change to blue on new ones). You can see the post titled, “Best Performing Adsense Ads Explained” for more information on converting adsense ads and understanding their payouts.

Here are the results this month (this is from Sept. 1 – Sept. 25, 2008):

GOOGLE ADSENSE EARNINGS:

KONTERA EARNINGS:

TRAFFIC THIS MONTH:

TOTAL WEBSITE EARNINGS:
Google Adsense: $17.95
Kontera Ads: $1.02

Total: $18.97

Last month’s (Aug. 1-25th) total revenue was $14.15, an increase of $4.82, which you have to look at the big picture in growth PERCENTAGE WISE, the sites revenue increased by 34% in a month!

Now, the site like I stated in my previous post has about 25-50 URLS, I couldn’t tell you exactly. Imagine when I get this site to have 10,000+ URLS. What do you think I’ll be earning from this site alone which takes no time except when I’m making new urls (post)? It can literally turn to thousands of dollars monthly.

Until the next update….

I am going to blog my updates and project for those who are just starting in the online marketing space trying to make some extra money at home by starting a website and trying to make money from Google Adsense or any other type of contextual advertising network.

I won’t give you the name of my website, but will post statistics and you’re welcome to ask your questions.

I blogged about this site about a week ago in a post I called, “Achieving #1 Google Results Without a Link” so that is why I’m recording this project in particular. You don’t need to do any SEO to rank in the engines but it is critical that you do have SEO on-site factors to your website such as optimizing specific URLs for titles, descriptions, keyword density, etc. THE BASICS.

There is currently a little less than 100 different URLs on this site and I strictly depend on low searched long-tail keywords (hence why it ranks.) This was a site that I just had laying around and I as I saw had some good rankings, I started to place Adsense and then also decided to go with Kontera.

**NOTE: IT IS CRITICAL YOU UNDERSTAND THE KEYWORDS IT RANKS FOR ARE LOW SEARCHED KEYWORDS.

Here are snapshots of my winnings in Aug since I started placing Adsense and Kontera which I believe began around Aug. 5, 2008 (as I update this project in future posts, I’ll be more precise in terms of time, etc.)

Google Adsense Earnings:

Kontera Earnings:

Here is the analytics for this page (look how low the traffic is! All Google,Yahoo, and AOL organic traffic):

OK..so from Aug 1-25, 2008:

Google Adsense: $13.21
Kontera: $0.94
Total Earnings: $14.15

Each new URL I make for this particular website takes about 3-6 minutes to build with all original content.

You may be asking yourself, “why waste time with such low numbers (money and traffic) and is it worth it?”

This is a long-term project for me and I will add 3-6 or 7 URLs per day for the 30 days which I will give my next update. I will not optimize the site at all but just keep adding content. This is 100% organic optimization.

Note the PageRank for this website is currently 0.

Next update will be Sept. 25, 2008

I’ll try to keep this post short and sweet. Many people have sites with an incredible amount of content and want to add more Google Adsense ads to monetize their site since other types of ads dont convert as well as Google Adsense. Currently, you are allowed 3 ad blocks per URL, I believe that to be true until now (correct me if I’m wrong.)

So, how do you add more Google Adsense ads then currently allowed by Google? I came up with the idea of using the iframe option on a website to add more ads.

Image taken from:1.webng.com

What is an iFrame?

The iframe works like an image only instead of putting a picture on the page, it puts another web page. Many affiliate marketers use iframes to run offers by buying a domain and basically just iframing an offer that affiliate networks provide to you. It is literally the fastest way to get an offer going, except the engine only reads the actual code, that is all that content that the engine reads ON YOUR SITE.

What is the iframe code?

Get the iframe Code Here.

So How Can I Add More Ads iframing?

Here is where you have to get your feet wet a bit and do the labor and see if you can do it. I’ve done this before and you just have to really try and get this right.

So, let’s say you have a site about the NBA (National Basketball Association). You will have to create another website (a dummy site moreless) that will be about basketball to but the sole purpose of this site will be to place the ad format you wish. Of course, since Google only displays its relevant ads due to its content, you will have to write some content on the site related to basketball.

Once you have the ad format you wish, you will now create an iframe on your “real” site and using the width and height of the iframe html code, you will iframe the “dummy” site to show the ads. The iframe code does show a scroll down, etc but it should work.

There was a thread on Digital Forums on how to get better CTRs (Click-Through-Rates) on your ads.

I have my own thought on what is the best way to display ads on your website but I’ll start off with what was suggested which is actually working for me as well.

This is the 300×250 ad that is said to convert best. I have started to implement this and it does convert. The links (as suggested) should be blue with black text and black URL display. Also, NO BORDERS.

Please note one thing about Adsense if you’re not too sure how it works and whose ads are being displayed. Adsense ads stem from pay-per-click advertisers who are bidding not only to appear in search results, but also in the content network which will display on sites that use Adsense to monetize their content. Only the highest bidders for certain keywords get their ads displayed. You can get lucky and pay .2 cents for a content click, or pay as much as $1-10 dollars (really varies)

SO, my point being, the more ads you have displayed, the less money you’ll get for that click. You want to keep your ads to a minimum so only the highest bidders ads appear on your site.

This 300×250 truly does convert pretty well but you are displaying 4 ads, which means the 4 highest bidders are appearing on your site.

What has always worked for me and my favorite is banner ads. I like to use banner ads in content and use the color of the text as the color of the link.

I wouldn’t call it tricking the user to click on an ad by mixing it with the content but you will get a better CTR and blends in better with the aesthetics of the site. The banner which is 468×60 displays two advertisers so you’re more likely to be getting paid more per click on one of those two ads. I wouldn’t use any borders on my ads because again, remember, you are trying to blend in with the content.

So, I was at Search Engine Strategies in New York at a contextual advertising session when something very funny happened…to me at least.

They were asking volunteers to show their sites on the big screen monitor to critique their sites and how they are using adsene to monetize their content/site. One man volunteered.

This story is what NOT TO DO at a search conference or think before you do, at least read the guidelines.

This guy had a content site reviewing prescription drugs which apparently, I didnt know but it is known, is against the Google Adsense guidelines.

Who was on the panel? GOOGLE. It was kind of an akward moment to be honest and of course the guy from Google (MAYBE), jotted the site down.

Anyway, it’s a lesson…Hours of work probably for nothing. I wonder if Google would have found the site and how they go about chasing down sites that don’t follow the guidelines.

OK, so ever since I got a Myspace profile I tried everything possible to get adsense code in there with my publisher ID so I can make money of the clicks…unfortunately that never happened.

I always thought advertisements on the profiles should be shared with the user, after all, we put all the time and effort in getting our own traffic, designing our site, etc.

Ads-Click, a company from Switzerland which has some presence in the U.S., has developed a Facebook application for users that allows users to put a code and deliver targeted ads to their users sharing 80% of the revenue (80% goes to you.) So, depending on your content from your profile and that of your visitor, it will display a relevant ad by text I believe, once they click, you get 80% of that click and 20% goes to them.

{If Facebook and Myspace offered this to their users with Adsense or any other contextual ad programs, there would be more of an incentive for profile users to drive traffic, refer friends, etc. I guess it comes down to SPAM and how the public will react}

It is called MicroSocialAds and should be out soon. How will Facebook react to this if they do? Facebook not getting a cut of advertising done through their site?

Friday morning, I posted a podcast titled, “Video Opportunity for Publishers & Advertisers.” Soon after, I was browsing the web just checking out some stuff and stumbled upon Swicki. Video is in and if you can monetize it, you should! In the podcast I talked about Adsense video units, which is basically an embedded YouTube video in your site or blog with an ad on top and at the bottom which I think can give you good CTRs.

So, Swicki is pretty cool. You can check it out on my blog at the left (it usually shows mini video clips but now it is showing a tag cloud.) Here is why I think this could work to monetize your visitors from video. It’s something new so users will be curious to click through. It’s a video widget which you set-up keyword tags and will show related videos (pretty cool videos you may even find interesting.) It scours Google video for related videos and takes the visitor to a site with all the videos in one place.

So how do you monetize this? While setting up your Swicki page, you can customize the ads section choosing what platform of ads to show (adsense, etc) and allows you to enter your code.

Financial news website Motley Fool had a report titled, “Is Google Broken?” I really suggest you read it, I thought it was a very interesting article but here is what struck me.

MIVA…you’ve heard of them right? Second tier engine…not a big name…not mentioned anywhere…public company. In its third quarter, the company pulled $36.7 million to $37.1 million in revenue if I understood right…that’s a lot of money, agreed?

How do you pull that…a second tier engine like MIVA. Interestingly enough, Google Adsense plays a big role in the MIVA business model. You can read all about it in the article but let’s take a quick look at the numbers:

“MIVA generated approximately $0.07 per lead on its 240 million clickthroughs during the third quarter of 2006. By outsourcing some of the billable ad space on its online destinations, search portals, widgets, and desktop toolbars to Google through the Google AdSense program, MIVA stood to make more on each generated lead, even after Google took its cut.”

If they made .7 cents a lead with 240 million click through and I’m doing the numbers right…that is $16,800,000.00. Arbitrage?????

The study is so detailed I’ll post some of it here; great interesting study.

Two things to think about when placing ads on your website:

1) Ad Positioning – Where is it? Is it Eye Catching?
2) Ad Content – Is it Relevant? (Sometimes Irrelevant ads to the content work best!)

Key Findings From The Study:

*Overall, two-thirds of online users have taken actions as a result of viewing online ads.

*Across all advertising, 14% more online consumers are more receptive to behaviorally targeted ads than to contextual ads – 63% vs. 49% of the total audience.

* BT outperforms contextual advertising in terms of consumer attention by at least 10% across 14 major product categories, from Financial Services to Consumer Electronics to Pharmaceuticals to Fashion and Style. For example:
o 17% more online purchasers of computing products are more receptive to behaviorally targeted ads.
o 18% more online auto purchasers are more receptive to behaviorally targeted ads.
o 20% more online telecom purchasers are more receptive to behaviorally targeted ads than to contextual ads.
* Attention-getting behavioral targeting is preferable because more than 75% of online shoppers shop only once per month or less – and the majority research a product only once or twice before buying.
