To Bring SEO In-House Or Not To Bring SEO In-House Is The Question
December 8, 2009 by Pablo Palatnik
Many small to medium size business, even large businesses explore the possibilities and positives/negatives of what it means to have an SEO team (or person) in house or to outsource SEO which is what many tend to do. Now, there are positives and negatives to both, I believe. If you ask me, I live in the Miami area, from MANY of the agency owners (online marketing) and some small business owners, the response I often get is, “there just isn’t the talent here.”
I’ve worked for an agency before, and from experience, I can tell you, SOME, NOT ALL agencies combat the growth of their business by hiring college grads and start teaching them the ropes by working on YOUR PROJECT. Now, that wasn’t always the case but it does tend to happen. As SEO gets more complex by the engines combating spam and black-hat SEO tactics or what they would consider to be “cheating” the algorithm, SEO becomes a harder strategy to plan and takes a lot of research to get the job done right.

This post was inspired by a video on WebProNews regarding the topic of having an SEO in-house or outsource the service. Jessica Bowman explains below:
When Jessica mentions the whole issue about IT doing the SEO, I actually tend to disagree with that. That becomes a whole seperate issue in SEO but as an SEO, I don’t believe my job would be replaceable by someone in IT, I simply believe it is the SEOs job to relay the important elements that can be a factor by a person in IT. Can IT do keyword research? Link building?
To bring SEO in-house or outsource it is a matter of different mentalities and resources for your business. Do you have the budget to bring some in-house for a full time position or part-time? Do they have experience? What is their experience? I think we ALL know, in this industry, real SEO doesn’t come cheap. So, whether you’re planning to outsource it or bring it in-house, they both have their cost you just have to decide what strategy will best suit your business. Having your SEO in-house means your company is now VERY involved in the process. Nevertheless, just because you outsource SEO doesn’t mean you can wash your hands. As most of you know, companies have to be constantly involved in the SEO process for it to be a success.

Everyone thinks that bringing SEO in house will save them money. It can often be more beneficial to hire an agency as you’ll stay up to date with current search methodologies.
Oliver-
I think the question about bringing SEO is tricky and like I said in the post, I think you have to look at different factors and maybe every business is structured differently and it can vary by case if its best to outsource or bring SEO in-house.
You have a good point in regards to keeping current with SEO, although an in-house SEO may be no different in that aspect of staying on top of new strategies, etc himself.
I would tend to say individual SEOs, and there are big names out there, and some who will never show their face, have much much success without a team of people around them.
