Webmasters Found Bug on Bing Regarding the No-Follow Attribute

August 6, 2009 by Pablo Palatnik

WebProNews reports in a post titled, “Bing Indexing NoIndex/Nofollow Content,” Bing is currently indexing sites that have the no-follow attribute and on the contrary, some webmasters are reporting they aren’t even getting indexed.

From all the buzz, Bing has been praised since its launch, well maybe not so much for its name but according to most people, it’s “growing” on them.

This bring the whole controversial topic of that damn NO-FOLLOW attribute tag everyone just loves to hate. Still waiting to see how this one will play out as many SEOs are on the up and up with this attribute that seems to be confusing many.

MSN Search respects “nofollow” as regards not counting the link in their ranking, but it is not proven whether or not MSN follows the link.

WebProNews quotes Bing Webmaster manager, “Program Manager, Bing Webmaster Center:

This is a known issue we are working quickly to resolve. If you have pages you would like permanently removed from our index, please send me a mail to bwmc@microsoft.com with your domain name and “MSNBot ignoring robots tags” in the subject line. Please also include the URLs in the body of the message. You may use an * wildcard for any directories such as:

http:example.com/ wrongdirectory/*

Normally, I would request that you fill out a content removal request, however, since this is a problem on our side, I’ll do the leg work for you.”

  1. I think over time we will see the characteristics of the no follow tag really get tweaked out. As more websites really try to use that to their advantage we will see search engines look at them differently.

  2. Pablo Palatnik says:

No matter what the engines do, SEOs will always try to find a way to “game” the algo. No-follow was really created when the blog spam became a huge problem but now people are using it to sculpt pagerank.

Its very up in the air of what will become of pagerank in the next few months as many are starting to brush it off, if that was the case, every blog an many webmasters still use the attribute.
