Burger King Values Your Facebook Friends at .37 Cents

January 12, 2009 by Pablo Palatnik

Facebook applications are still a great way to advertiser, promote, and brand your product or company. Take the latest example of Burger King promoting their new Angry Whopper burger which retails at $3.69 (plus tax) I’m sure.

So, what this new application Burger King as put out on Facebook getting the attention of the many media outlets?

It’s called WHOPPER SACRIFICE. When you install the application on your Facebook profile, you have to get rid of 10 friends in order for you to receive a free Angry Whopper coupon by mail. That means, for every friend you delete, that friend is worth .37 cents to BK.

Although this idea may bring some negative advertising, I find it quite genius and interesting. For one, we still see the use of social media being used by bigger and bigger companies when it was just small companies or individuals trying to pull viral stunts to blow up a product or brand.

“Facebook is an amazing way to keep current with your friends, but it’s becoming more of a popularity contest with how many friends you have as the barometer,” said Mr. Gies. “We wanted to be part of its momentum and growth, but in an inverse way.” (Quote taken from NYTimes.com article)

Well wow! What is the world coming to? Facebook was meant to post pictures and keep in touch with friends; now we want to get rid of our friends for burgers?! Is Burger King that worth it? I guess it is to some people.
