Building A Large Website vs. A Niche Website

Written by Pablo Palatnik on November 13, 2008

In recent times, probably 2 years or less, we’ve seen the web (websites) get more and more niche. For example you have a website that reviews all cars, and then you have a website that only talks about Honda Civics. You have an auction website like eBay that sells everything under the sun, and then you have Bidz which only auctions jewelry.

Most marketers have drilled down building on a niche of a niche! Its almost becoming/became a competition of how far in the niche you can drill down to get a better conversion from a user/customer that will show your website is as relevant as it can be to what they are searching for.

Time is one of the key elements we have to look at when strategizing for our SEO/PPC campaigns. How much time will we have to devote to this website/campaign and where do we want to go with it? What will be an overall better strategy for optimization and/or conversion? Should I build a big hub website or lots of small niche websites targeting certain keywords?

I’m a big believer in bigger is better. Now, it really depends on what it is you’re trying to accomplish, how fast you want your results, and how you can maximize your website to the time you’re putting in it.

For those of you who have done PPC (as well as have good ranking sub pages or niche sites in the SERPs) have probably seen niche websites convert better. Thats no secret, the more relevant the site is to the user, the better experience they’ll have and the better conversion you’ll see.

I think building a large website is the better, overall SEO strategy. I think Google gives more authority to larger websites with good original content. Why? Let’s think about it for a minute.

When building a large website, you’re building a hub with endless possibilities of content to add. When I talk about a big website, Im talking about building a website on the broad subject rather then the niche of that industry/subject, whatever you want to call it. For example, I gave the example of a website that reviews cars and a website that only reviews honda civics. You can go more niche and only review honda civic hybrid cars.

Which of those websites do you think you’ll have more content to write about? The big review hub. Granted, you may think that writing only about Honda Civics will get you more authority for certain Honda Civic keywords and that may be true, but ultimately, you’ll have a lot more sites (urls) about every kind of car giving you a lot more content and exposure in the SERPs.

With a large website you will have endless content to submit to social bookmark websites, and I just think it creates the opportunity for a much better linking (SEO) strategy.

Niche websites are great to build on PPC campaigns and of course, if its a big niche, its wise as well. What do you think?

  3. I was contemplating this the other day as I am considering different tactics on SEO and if to build one site or many sub sites.

I think you’re right about more possibilities on the linking front. Makes sense!
