Obama Web 2.0 Strategy Brought Politics 2.0 to Life. An Online Marketing Presidential Strategy.
November 10, 2008 by Pablo Palatnik
It wasn’t until this past presidential election where we saw the true power of web 2.0 come into play which changed the face of a presidential election change forever. From YouTube taking place in the preliminary debates to nominees creating Facebook, Myspace and other social profiles to get their name and cause out to the masses.

Although the internet was used by all running for office, NO ONE did it better than Barack Obama. “Were it not for the Internet, Barack Obama would not be president. Were it not for the Internet, Barack Obama would not have been the nominee,” said Arianna Huffington, editor-in-chief of The Huffington Post.
Obama not only created a campaign online, what he created, essentially, was a movement of the masses. A call for change. A sense of hope. A new beginning for America. While many were putting their efforts in other mediums of the media (Radio, TV) Obama pushed his campaign with web 2.0 tools such as creating his own social website, MyBarackObama.com, which allows you to create an account and organize and get in touch with your local community for support for Obama.
As the New York Times reports on the story, “How Obama’s Internet Campaign Changed Politics,”
Mr. Obama’s campaign took advantage of YouTube for free advertising. Mr. Trippi argued that those videos were more effective than television ads because viewers chose to watch them or received them from a friend instead of having their television shows interrupted.
“The campaign’s official stuff they created for YouTube was watched for 14.5 million hours,” Mr. Trippi said. “To buy 14.5 million hours on broadcast TV is $47 million.”
As we will see in the coming year, the success the internet has had in Obamas campaign and success, Obamas government will also reach out to the people using the web with website such as Change.gov, and what the nyt reports MyWhiteHouse.gov.
This, in my opinion, is the biggest success online marketing story. This was an online marketing campaign to hold the highest position in this country, some may say in the world, president of the United States of America. It was done by creating a grass root movement reaching out to the masses by what has become the most effective medium to communicate with the masses (the world) the internet.
The same strategy that Obama used is the same strategy we can all use to grow our business. That’s why social media should be a very important part of our marketing strategy besides focusing on SEO, PPC, etc.
