Don’t Be an Affiliate Marketer, Be a Content Creator
Written by Pablo Palatnik on September 19, 2008
I guess by the title you may think I’m anti affiliate marketer. I actually think affiliate marketing is one of the hardest tasks to pull online because you’re dealing with many variables which are out of your control. For the most part, you’re relying on a third party system to tell you if you’re doing your job right (conversion rate tracking.)

This post isn’t about that. I think many people fail at affiliate marketing for the simple reason of having a short term strategy which consist of picking an offer, setting up the ppc campaign either direct linking or putting the site in an iframe, and hitting the switch for the offer to go live.
Many will argue the case about direct linking strategy and if it works or not. It may work 1-10, it may not. BUT, you have to look at some components of your strategy. Is it long-term? Will this person come back to my site? Wheres the value in what I’m doing compared to others? Ask yourself these questions because your competitors probably already are.
As the old saying goes, content is king. Forget about content for search engine purposes which of course is huge, but the true content comes in the giving the consumer real value on your website to keep them coming back.
NOW, when i said forget about content for search engines, I only said that to make the consumer point but as a long-term strategy, thats just what you have to do. Build an authoritative website that can rank in the search engines and deliver as much organic traffic as possible while having your affiliate links, offers, etc there.
If you hear people like Shoemoney speak which is considered a “super affiliate”, he’ll always say he is not an affiliate marketer but “fell into it.”
Develop your content, make your site an authoritative site with great information, as the traffic builds, now you have free traffic that is MORE LIKELY to convert then sending paid traffic to the same ol’ landing page most are probably already driving traffic to.
Sure, this is A LOT more work, but in the long run, it’ll pay off.
