Achieving #1 Google Results Without a Link

August 18, 2008 by Pablo Palatnik

As competitive as it has gotten to get a #1 keyword search result in Google, it is still very possible to get the top spot. What If I were to tell you that you can get a #1 keyword search result in Google without having a single inbound link, would you believe me? Well…you should.

I started a website about 4-5 months ago when I started noticing traffic coming in from Google and Yahoo. I have Google Analytics installed on all my sites to always check my sources of traffic, etc. How am I starting to rank well for certain keywords WITHOUT having ONE inbound link? All I can tell you that it is simple site structure that is having weight within the search engine.

Given the fact that I’m ranking well for certain keywords and the long tail is playing a role, now I start a link building campaign and start optimizing the site to give it that boost for other words, etc.

CONTENT IS KING, yes. You’ve heard this before. It is imperative to have the right site structure and SEO basics that can really make your link building campaigns a great success.

Content is king indeed but if nobody can find it it’s not really valuable for your site (and the search engines) and ultimately it will get in Google’s SI .

I agree that in some cases you can rank at#1 for non competitive or longtail keywords/phrases in some markets but it’s rather unusual. It is a different story if you have an older , more trusted domain although. When Google (or the other one’s out there) give you an “I trust your site” badge, it’s more easy to get higher in the SERPS without a single link. If your internal structure is fine, you can achieve great results.

I also forgot to add and to maybe comment on what Dave said above here, The keywords that are ranking in the first position in Google SERPs are for words which yield less than 700,000 search results. Nevertheless, the domain and site are less than a year old.
