Best Performing Adsense Ads Explained
August 14, 2008 by Pablo Palatnik
There was a thread on Digital Forums on how to get better CTRs (Click-Through-Rates) on your ads.
I have my own thought on what is the best way to display ads on your website but I’ll start off with what was suggested which is actually working for me as well.

This is the 300×250 ad that is said to convert best. I have started to implement this and it does convert. The links (as suggested) should be blue with black text and black URL display. Also, NO BORDERS.
Please note one thing about Adsense if you’re not too sure how it works and whose ads are being displayed. Adsense ads stem from pay-per-click advertisers who are bidding not only to appear in search results, but also in the content network which will display on sites that use Adsense to monetize their content. Only the highest bidders for certain keywords get their ads displayed. You can get lucky and pay .2 cents for a content click, or pay as much as $1-10 dollars (really varies)
SO, my point being, the more ads you have displayed, the less money you’ll get for that click. You want to keep your ads to a minimum so only the highest bidders ads appear on your site.
This 300×250 truly does convert pretty well but you are displaying 4 ads, which means the 4 highest bidders are appearing on your site.
What has always worked for me and my favorite is banner ads. I like to use banner ads in content and use the color of the text as the color of the link.

I wouldn’t call it tricking the user to click on an ad by mixing it with the content but you will get a better CTR and blends in better with the aesthetics of the site. The banner which is 468×60 displays two advertisers so you’re more likely to be getting paid more per click on one of those two ads. I wouldn’t use any borders on my ads because again, remember, you are trying to blend in with the content.

Thanks for the post pablo.
i found the info about having less ads to ensure the highest money per click especially interesting.
can you tell me, does this mean i should have as few ad blocks as possible on my page? or does this only apply to the number of ads within a specific block?
thanks again
grant-
what this means is yes, you should have as least ads (adsense block) on the url so that only the highest paying advertisers show up.
that way, you can earn a lot more per click since the inventory is minimal.
makes sense?
if you have too many ad blocks, especially those with 4 ads showing, etc..you’re showing too many advertisers who may be bidding .5 cents on the content network.
Thanks! I’m going to use these tips on my blog. I never even thought about keeping the ads to a minimal and what that would mean. Keep up the good work!
