Say Pagerank Update and Everybody Jumps

Written by Pablo Palatnik on July 18, 2008

Who knows when it will be, but of course Google will update its current value it gives to a site by updating the pagerank, if you don’t know what pagerank is, see image below:

Anyway, Pagerank, though there is a big mystery about it and a lot of discussion about its worth to a site in terms of SEO relevance, etc, is thought to be a very good measure of optimization for your website, you may agree, you may not, but if your site goes from a PR 5 to a PR 3, you’ll be pissed and you know it, even if you think its irrelevant, just pisses you off…WHY GOOGLE? WHY?????

This blog was recently updated from a PR 3 to a PR 4, not that long ago either, I’d say about 2-3 months ago and I have seen no real SEO value in that except it maybe shows Google is crediting me for building more links to my site.

I’m not sure I have a real goal as to trying to reach higher pagerank which would be nice but it does feel good to see that little bar get greener and greener. Whether it matters or not, I think SEOs are Pagerank addicts…they may say they aren’t, but when the next update comes, watch the blogosphere go nuts…till then…keep building your links.

  3. thanks for this article,
    i want to ask that?
which is better for my site? 1 pr8 backlink or 3 Pr6 backlink

  4. @ Lida-

It really depends. You obviously want to have a link pointing to your site from the most authoritative sites which a PR 8 is pretty authoritative by Google standards.

When considering what would be better you have to ask yourself besides the PR, is a link from that site going to bring in some traffic and if it does, what type of traffic is it? Relevant or non-relevant?

I have a PR4 on this blog and rank for the keyword animal sex, granted when someone visits my blog searching for something related to animal sex, they arent thrilled about the content here, right?

I would probably go for the PR8 link but again, there are some other factors I would consider looking at the othe PR6 sites.

  5. The most recent PageRank was a little surprising in its results. Even though my company has been focusing on SEO and building links, this last Google PageRank pulled us down a number in the ranking. We have been very careful in only linking to relevant sites too.

  6. @ EH-

I’m not surprised at all. Keep in mind, PageRank is one of the most UN-transparent “thing” google has because there is so much uncertainty about it.

These are answers Matt Cutts or other Googlers should be able to answer why someone only choosing relevant links to point back would lower ones pagerank.

I’ve also had sites lose some pagerank without really knowing why but thats Google for you. At the end of the day it matters how you’re ranking in the engine and not so much your pagerank score.
