Online Marketing Predictions for 2008

Published by Pablo Palatnik at 2:19 pm under Online Marketing

I’d like to wish all Palatnik Factor readers a great 2008, may this new year bring you lots of traffic, links, and good rankings. I think 2007 was a good year for me, professionally. I started this blog which was just something to have and start-up to see what happens. I have to say, so far, so good.

Things look on the up & up. I think we’re in a booming industry and it’s something to be excited about, I know I am. That’s what motivates me to blog. This industry changes constantly (I’d say almost daily!) so it’s never really hard to write content.

My predictions for 2008:

• PPC algorithm (Google) will continually change to improve quality scores. We’ve seen PPC take an SEO route where sites almost have to be “optimized” for a keyword to perform well in with Adwords quality score. I think we’ll see even more of an algo change to make PPC simulate SEO.

• Social news sites. 2007 was the year of Digg. With so much speculation on it being sold and having the same ol’ Digg, Stumble, and Propeller sites, some new social news site will emerge to be our next hub of submitting new stories.

• Video growth. This has been happening steadily but I think this year we’ll see more advertisers give video a chance to market their product/service.

• Web 2.0 growth. It won’t fail that in 2008 we’ll see the surge of a new type of media outlet/site that will become a new trend for users and in turn, become a place to advertise for marketers. Early to mid 2007 was the rise and growing popularity of social sites like Myspace and Facebook while social news sites like Digg and Stumbleupon became the big players in what became a phenomenon online. Blogging was one of the biggest surges online. These channels will continue to grow but a new type of “web 2.0” site will come out and be a big player in 2008, more than one.

• The year of Mobile. Somehow I feel this is it. 2007 has been a preparation of advertiser seeing the potential for mobile and as 2008 starts, we’ll see more and more mobile advertising and chat very soon.

• Online Advertising Budgets Increase. I may be saying this year after year. If you read many research reports on online ad spend, it is always predicted by 2010, 2015, etc ad spend will continue to grow. I think 2007 was the year where many companies, though they may not have spent money advertising online, many saw the potential and important. Expect 2008 to be a better year with ad spend and have clients increase budgets.

• International growth. As the world gets more connected online, expect more international traffic whether it is through organic search or other venues.

• More SEO Focus. Even though SEO is misunderstood by many, it still continues to be very much in demand with many advertisers. More focus and budget will come to get better search engine rankings from advertisers.
