SEO Black Hat Brain vs. White Hat Brain [PIC]

October 23, 2007 by Pablo Palatnik

So, people are always comparing the white hat SEOs to the Black hat SEOs and different techniques used. I think most SEOs these days flirt with the Grey Hat area, and with competition getting harder and harder for several industries (or all), they tend to also use black hat techniques. These may seem oldschool. What am I missing? Wrong about? Speak your mind.

[UPDATE: Everyone, thanks for your comments, the brains are changing with your comments!]

  1. what is clocking? i want to try it.

  2. fixed ftw! ;)

Also, with the blackhat brain I would put “speed” in there. from what i have seen time and speed is almost always a factor with blackhat techniques

I fixed it now =). Cloaking.

    Make-an-SEO-Brain as work-in-progress? Great idea!

    Some further suggestions:

WH Brain: Dominant factor (maybe in red?) – ETHICS
BH Brain: Dominant factor – AUTOMATION

More BH brain stuff: ‘Hidden text’ is out – suggest replacing with ‘Trackback spam’
‘Doorway pages’ are out, too – suggest replacing with ‘XSS exploits’

WH Brain: ‘Link Buying?’ – with question mark
BH Brain: ‘Link Buying!’ – with exclamation mark

Just a few thoughts. Keep it up! :)

The blackhat brain has been updated =). I think hidden text is still in a black hat SEOs mind. Maybe not as used, still def something tried.

Hmm white hats have much less going on in their brains ;)

Seriously though, I’d agree with Ralph about the link buying. I even saw someone called themselves a white-hat link buyer the other day, as they always get them from relevant sites. There’s a load of confusion about that topic (not helped by Google) and most people are smart enough to understand that money comes into the process in one form or another.

  7. Andy Beard says:

WH Brain – I want my website to rank
BH Brain – Some of this S#$% might stick

WH Brain – In 12 months you might start ranking
BH Brain – Yesterday isn’t soon enough

  8. fantomaster says:

@Nick: Expectably, I’ll second that (including the wh brain activity bit). :)

    @Andy: Spot on, as usual.

Maybe we could add that Matt Cutts picture in the black hat brain, too – with a bull’s eye overlay. (Nothing personal, heh…)

Black hat brains usually dont like the hard work or the get easily crazy and boring in seo and search engine ranking. They dot follow the seach engine rule so black hat is the answer while white hat brain are more hardworking, they are afraid of big G or to get being banned from the seach engine.

  14. [...] Matt Cutts, as stated above for those who don’t know if one of Googles main, if not, THE main search engineer to the SEO community, has talked about pagerank sculpting before. Let’s look at two videos from 2009 and one very recent from 2010. [...]
