College Students of The 00’ Are The Most Wired Generation Yet

August 3, 2007 by Pablo Palatnik

Not only is it important to know and understand search trends in online marketing, but also keep tabs on what your target demographic is doing. A lot of affiliate marketers, and big online advertisers target college students. eMarketer reports on the usage of this demographic.

Stats

Some of the stats I found useful:

*Students at four year colleges spend 19.2 hours online per week.
*Upward of 80% of students use social networking sites on a regular basis

Other stats provided which are useful to advertisers:
• 95% own a mobile phone
• 78% sent a text message in the past week
• 75% own a music player, such as an iPod
• 55% own a video game device

I’ve been using social media sites such as Myspace as an advertising channel since almost its beginning (almost have the eBook ready). These are just more stats which show the importance to jump into these channels.

If you still have not started a social media campaign, here are what I believe to be the most important places to start:

-Myspace
-Digg
-Stumbleupon

Just from these four three sources, you’ll see instant traffic with a strategy in place.

Share and Enjoy:
  • Digg
  • Sphinn
  • del.icio.us
  • Facebook
  • Mixx
  • Google

As someone who is only 2 years out of university, this doesn’t surprise me at all. I see it both in my own life (I do everything online), and in the lives of my peers (many of whom are still in college).

Definitely another reason to get involved in social media marketing, especially if this is your target demographic.
