David vs. Goliath = Myspace vs. Facebook for the Throne

June 13, 2007 by Pablo Palatnik

A year ago, it seemed no one can really catch up to the market share and buzz about Myspace. The social website dominated buzz in television, print media, and blogs (as far as social sites go). A few months ago, it seems a sudden shift in the market made a sharp switch, turning manys attention to Facebook.

For the most part, the FaceBook demographic is about 18 years old to late 20s. Myspace has become a space for all demographics, which recently, FaceBook opened its door to. Myspace has become a hub for SPAM. Ringtones? Become rich quick? Sound familiar? Just sign into your Myspace account and you should have a friend request from a spammer or a comment that sometimes you can’t even delete! (although Myspace has cleaned up the comments issues and trying to clean up spam daily).

Facebook seems to be spam free for the moment. But, it wont be long until programmers and software developers start selling Facebook bots to request friends and comment on your “wall”.

One of the features that has users raving is the user feeds, letting you know what your friends are up to. The launch of the Facebook widgets has also put the social giant over the top and leading Myspace in its evolution. Wait, Myspace did change the color of the fonts letting you know you have a new friend request or new mail. Myspace, I hope you’re just taking a nap and haven’t fully fell asleep…Facebook is leading in its constant evolution of its website. The functionalities Facebook has added (and will add) has everyone talking.

Myspace remains the #1 social media website for online marketers and desired by big companies, but that shift in market mentality will change within the next few weeks or months to come.

Velocity in Growth:

Yahoo is now said to be chasing Facebook once again for an estimated $2 billion, after they turned down a $1.64 billion dollar offer .

Which are you using? Which do you like better and why?

I actually use both…I am impressed with the changes Facebook has made in the last few months though!

  2. Mariam M. says:

I use Facebook and like you say, it is a more organized, clean and easy to view layout. I personally don’t have Myspace and from what i’ve seen from friend’s sites.. i don’t like it. It’s vulgar and way too popular nowadays. Besides Facebook offers more privacy regarding what other people (not your friends) see.
I hope spam doesn’t get to it any time soon or it will become just as bad as Myspace… ughh!
