How Many Diggs Do I Need To Get To The Home Page?

May 4, 2007 by Pablo Palatnik

I get this question a lot, mostly from people who are told of the traffic possibilities of being on the home page of Digg, try to submit a story, and fail.

Digg

I’ll start by saying something I’ve said in all my past posts, YOU HAVE TO BE INTERACTIVE. That’s just one of the factors, but a major one at that. Remember, You have hundreds of thousands of people reading and submitting stories who not only go to Digg, but the web, these are mostly people with time on their hands (young demographic for the most part) and they’re up to date.

I’m writing an eBook on SMO (Social Media Optimization & Strategies) so I will write a lot more about this but to answer the question quick of HOW MANY DIGGS it takes to make it to the front page depending on the category (from experience and research) within THE FIRST HALF HOUR/ HOUR or so (big momentum game):

Gaming: 50+ Diggs
Entertainment: 55-70+ Diggs
Technology: 55-80+ Diggs
Science: 50-70+ Diggs
Video: 55+ Diggs
Sports: 35-50 Diggs+
World & Business: 65-80+ Diggs

Keep in Mind: Digg algorithm does in fact take into consideration the amount of friends you have and how many friends do vote on your story. Basically, the algo becomes tougher in terms of Diggs if you have a lot of friends.

Many of you might say you’ve had more Diggs and not make it to the front page, but again, an alogrithm plays a big role here. My theory is all within a time frame to be certain to make it to the home page.

Pablo, thanks for clearing this up for everyone. I also wanted to mention that the more digg gets gamed the more likely that these numbers will increase.
